PEORIA -- The Peoria Area World Affairs Council's 39th annual conference is this coming weekend, and it couldn't be more timely.
The event, at the Embassy Suites Conference Center in East Peoria, brings international experts on Pakistan to central Illinois. At least they're scheduled to appear.
The keynote address, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27 is "The Role of the United States in Pakistan’s Future," by Trudy Rubin, prizewinning international reporter and columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
A panel discussion at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28 is "Governing Pakistan, Balancing Conflicting Political Pressures," with the The Hon. Farahnaz Ispahani, member of Pakistan’s Parliament; Ambassador Touqur Hussain, former ambassador to Pakistan and professor at George Washington University, Washington, DC; and Marvin Weinbaum of the Middle East Institute, Washington, DC.
The closing keynote address at 1 p.m. is "Pakistan, Perspective from the Inside," with the Hon Husain Haqqani, Pakistan Ambassador to the US.

These events are open to the public but there is an admission fee.
On Thursday, March 5, at 7 p.m. the council's Great Decisions Discussion Series continues with a “Universal Human Rights” discussion. This program is free and open to the public.
The discussion leader is George Hopkins, professor emeritus at Western Illinois University.
Briefing books are still available for $20. This program will follow the business meeting at 5:30 pm, at the Dining Hall at ICC North, 5407 N. University.
Bradley University offers a related program on Wednesday March 4 at 8 p.m. in Neumiller Hall where Barbara Martinez Jinter will discuss the border town of Juarez, Mexico, and her research into the extensive violence against women factory workers.
She's a prominent writer, activist and film maker.
