PEORIA -- Here are two under-publicized events likely to be interesting and provocative.
On Tuesday, March 3, Nonie Darwish, who founded the Arabs for Israel organization, is speaking at 7:30 pm in Olin 168 at Bradley University.
This highly controversial activist was banned from speaking at Brown University. She is the author of the book Now they Call Me Infidel; Why I Renounced Jihad for America, Israel and the War on Terror.
Her mission is to "promote reconciliation, acceptance and understanding" between Israelis and Arabs. This event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by Bradley’s Hillel organization.
Then Thursday, March 19, the Peoria Area World Affairs Council presents 'The Future of Diplomacy, Report of the American Academy of Diplomacy,' with Ambassador Dennis Jett.
His blog is called The Smirking Chimp, and it looks highly provocative.
He speaks at 7 p.m. at Barrack’s Cater Inn, 1224 W. Pioneer Parkway, Peoria.
Jett joined the inaugural faculty of the newly created School of International Affairs at Pennsylvania State University in 2008.
A former career diplomat, Jett served 28 years in the State Department in positions including Ambassador to Peru, Ambassador to Mozambique, on the National Security Council, and in Argentina, Israel, Malawi and Liberia.
According to the news release: The Academy was founded in 1983 by Ambassadors Ellsworth Bunker, U. Alexis Johnson, and John J. McCloy to explore ways in which persons who had served in positions of major responsibility could cooperate to promote the highest standards in the practice of American diplomacy. Today, the Academy is dedicated to strengthening the resources and tools America brings to managing its diplomatic challenges, and accomplishes this through outreach programs, lectures, awards, and writing competitions. In doing so, the Academy promotes an understanding of the importance of diplomacy to serving our nation and enhancing America’s standing in the world.
A reception begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner served at 6 p.m.
Tickets for the presentation and dinner that are pre-paid are cheaper.
