PEORIA -- Several hundred people gathered in front of the Peoria County Courthouse on June 18 to protest proposed state cutbacks to child care services.
The heat was intense and the sound system didn't work, but that didn't matter to the crowd, mostly young families, especially women with children.
They carried handmade signs and showed up at 6 p.m., usually the family dinner hour. They appeared despite a lack of publicity in the mainstream media, which didn't bother to use news releases about the event.
Nevertheless, the Peoria Journal Star did a strong story on the rally.
These are folks who rarely if ever turn out for a political rally. Now they've awakened. Now they're politicized. Politicians beware.
