Poetry Oct. 5

 WASHINGTON, IL --  Poet Mike Foster will be giving a free reading at The Blend coffeehouse, 1130 Peoria St., in Washington from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday., Oct. 5.

Foster, a former Illinois Central College professor of journalism and English who retired in 2005, will read selections from his upcoming collection, Schoolboy Loves His Pie. Here's a sample:

The essence made electric, the thing itself the poem about it the thing the manic driver who grinds his teeth coursing down the long road, the poem the beatific old hitch-hiker, keeping quiet, trying to see how far he can ride for free.
