PEORIA -- Rumors of the death of classical music have been greatly exaggerated, at least in Peoria.
Classical music fans packed St Mary's Cathedral on Nov. 21 to hear an extraordinary concert, Mozart's Symphony in G Minor, K. 183 and his Requiem in D Minor, K. 626.
The $10 ticket price made the concert, by the Bradley University Community Chorus with professional soloists and the Bradley Symphony Orchestra, affordable. And what a georgeous treat it was.
Mozart's music likely was created for such a venue, with accoustics that gave the sound a richness that no ordinary modern concert hall could match.
The selections have been made famous to non-classical fans from the film Amadeus.
Program notes pointed out that the symphony was written by Mozart at age 17 (amazing!), and the Requiem done by a dying Mozart, as depicted in the film. Youth and age, life and death... timeless themes.
The chorus and symphony performed beautifully, for a delightfully moving musical experience.
