PEORIA -- Here are two interesting speakers on the Middle East. From news releases:
Jasmine Flora will be speaking at the Universalist/Unitarian Church, 3000 W. Richwoods, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday May 4, and at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 6 at Forrest Hill United Methodist Churchm 706 E. Forrest Hill.
In 2010, for five months, Jasmine Stucky was part of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) in a section of East Jerusalem called Sheikh Jarrah. This neighborhood was provided to Palestinian families by a 1950s UN Resolution, where they settled after the 1948 war forced them out of their homes. For the past few years, these families have been forcibly evicted and their homes transferred to Jewish settler organizations.
Jasmine worked full-time with Israelis, Palestinians and other ISM members to support the Palestinian families who faced eviction. She did this through media assistance, non violent direct action, international accomplishment and jail support.
The event is sponsored by the Peoria Area Peace Network.
And here's another speaker:
The Peoria Area World Affairs Council presents Robert Seibert, political science professor at Knox College, with an update on the Middle East.
He speaks Thursday, May 19 at Barrack's Cater Inn, 1224 W. Pioneer Parkway, with a reception at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. and presentation at 7 p.m.
Tickets for the dinner and presentation are $30 for World Affairs Council Members and students, $35 for others. For the presentation only the cost is $10 for members purchased early, and $15 for others and at the door.
The protest movements calling for reform that are sweeping across the Middle East and North Africa are being referred to as the “Middle East Spring.” Dr. Seibert is a nationally known expert on the region and will examine the root of these protest movements.
He’ll also discuss how these movements may be affected by the death of Osama bin Laden and the impact of these calls for change on U.S. relations and interests in the region.
