Once again the HFO greets the New Year with a salute to Vienna, but this time with a twist. We have invited Broadway stars Elizabeth Southard* and Gary Mauer* to join us as we follow the Viennese traditions forward in music history to new popular of the present day.
The program will include pieces by Jacques Offenbach, Johann and Josef Strauss, and Franz Lehar – performed with love and affection. Next we turn to music of early American operettas and musical comedy (both stage and cinema), by Victor Herbert (Babes in Toyland), Jerome Kern (Showboat), and Wright & Forrest(Kismet).
The concert moves further into the 20th and 21st Centuries in its second half, with Popular, from Stephen Schwartz’s Wicked, and favorite pieces from Kander and Ebb’s Chicago, Lloyd-Webber’s Phantom, , Schoenberg’s Les Miserables, and Bernstein’s West Side Story.
Soprano Beth Southard and Tenor Gary Mauer have appeared in long-running shows, including the Broadway productions of Phantom and Showboat. Their stage chemistry is enriched by the fact that they are husband and wife.
